It was in my 100 level second semester when there was a change in leadership of my fellowship that I was chosen as the music director.
My choir coordinator who was in his 400 level at the time knew he would be going for the compulsory six months industrial training (I.T) by second semester, called me one day and had a lengthy conversation with me and counselled me regarding the affairs of the choir unit.
In the counsel, he took his time to open my eyes to some challenges that are likely to face any choir leader, and what to be done in order to manage the challenges without being perceived as a boss or a dictator.
He said to me, “Nifemi, you are now the music director which means you are in charge of selection of songs to be ministered every Sunday services, you are also expected to stand in front of the choir during rehearsals to teach them both their different parts and how to sing the selected song(s)”
He continued by telling me how to manage both the musicians (instrumentalists) and lead vocalists at every point in time. So he said, “You know how to play the piano (keyboard) so that none of the keyboardists would misbehave or take you for a ride. Any time you notice any funny attitude from any of them, take charge and play the piano yourself. The same thing applies to bass guitar since you play that as well”
“You are a very good lead vocalist, therefore none of the other vocalists can mess things up unnecessarily for you, and if anyone you might have given song(s) to score disappoints, you can easily take over and deliver maximally” – so he said to me.
We resumed second semester and the choir coordinator had gone for the I.T which finally made me become the acting choir coordinator and before we knew what was happening, everyone started calling me “choir cord”
As we continued journeying through the second semester, in no distant time I began to see the manifestation of different attitudes from some choir members, but thankfully for the training and counsel I had gotten earlier, I also began to apply the wisdom gathered so as to regulate things and bring everyone to the same page. In no time, the session ended and a new session started in which I had graduated to 300 level and at this time the fellowship leadership made me “The Choir Coordinator”.
Throughout my tenure as the choir coordinator, the level of love displayed amongst the members grew by 300 percent, as there was nothing like segregation or division of any kind. An 100 level student could easily relate with a 500 level student without any form of inferiority complex and we all had an amazing tenure. Even while we were preparing for the annual choir concert tagged “He Reigns” (HR), it was a very smooth journey for everyone.
In the business world today, the same principles I applied as the choir coordination in my school days are also very much applicable till tomorrow so as not to mess things up in business. You need to ensure that you know something about every aspect of your business. There shouldn’t be any of your employees or staff who knows everything about his/her office and you as the proprietor or director is an amateur, such a situation will always put you in a very tight corner which is not good for you as a business owner.
Therefore, as you look forward to having an incredible result in your business this week, also take your time to review your mode of operation and see what to adjust so as to always be on top of your game.
Happy New Week
